African Union Rejects Claims It Blamed Egypt Over Ethiopia Tensions
The commission acknowledged Egypt’s objections to a statement it issued Oct. 1, which called on Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt to show the highest level of restraint, maintain dialogue and address disputes through diplomatic means.
“Under no circumstances” was the statement intended to assign responsibility for developments in Ethiopia to any neighboring state, the commission said.
It explained that the appeal came after diplomats were expelled from Addis Ababa, Cairo and Asmara and was intended to prevent misunderstandings, further escalation and the spread of tensions that could endanger stability in the region.
The commission reiterated its support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity of all African Union member states, along with the principle of non-interference in their domestic affairs.
It emphasized that its public statements are strictly connected to its mandate of advancing peace, security and stability across Africa and are not intended to address internal matters within member states.
Egypt had objected to the commission’s statement on Saturday, with an official source calling it an “incomprehensible attempt” to involve Cairo in an internal Ethiopian matter.
